Anna KARAMANOU
Former MEP, Chairperson of the European Parliament FEMM Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality

Member of the European Parliament (1997-2004), elected member of the Bureau of the S&D Group, Chairperson of the FEMM Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality (2002-2004).
Gender justice, democracy, human rights, European integration, international politics & history, life-long learning, active citizenship, conflict resolution, peace & good neighbour relations have been at the centre of Anna’s interests.
An activist for women’s rights and a trade-unionist in Greek Telecommunications OTE (1974-1991), where she worked for 23 years. Has also served as a member of the Women’s Committee of the Greek Confederation of Labour (GSEE) and member of the Women’s Committee of the European Trade Unions Confederation (ETUC).
National expert in two European networks on gender equality issues: 1) “Diversification of Educational and Vocational choices of women”, 1982-1989, 2) “Women in decision-making”, 1992-1996.
The project leader of “Training Women in New Technologies”, Syros island, 1992-1996.
The State General Secretary for Equality (1996-97). Member of the Association of Women Scientists and the National Council of Greek Women, elected Chairperson of PASOK Women (1994-2004), Vice-President of the Socialist International of Women (1996-2004), elected vice-president of PES Women (1999-2015). Member of the Greek Association of Political Science, 2016-
Awarded the prize of “Peace and Friendship A. IPEKCI”, for contributing to the Greek-Turkish rapprochement, 1999. Many awards for activism and political interventions on women’s rights and gender equality.
