“Anna Karamanou at the Karpathos Conference on the Leadership Role of Women in Tourism!”

"Anna Karamanou at the Karpathos Conference on the Leadership Role of Women in Tourism!"

“The Leadership Role of Women in Tourism: The Case of Karpathos” is the topic that will be presented at the Conference to be held in Karpathos.

The conference titled “TOURISM-CULTURE-TRADITION AND NEW TECHNOLOGIES – TRENDS AFTER THE CRISIS PERIOD.”
It will take place on June 28 and 29, 2021, at the municipal amphitheater in the capital of Karpathos.

The 2019 report from the UNWTO informs us that the majority of the global tourism workforce is female: 54% compared to 39% in the wider economy. Furthermore, the majority of Tourism Ministers are women: 23% of Tourism Ministers compared to 20.7% of all Ministers. Thus, tourism offers women more opportunities for economic independence, successful entrepreneurial activity, the elimination of gender inequalities, and numerous opportunities for leadership roles. “Tourism leads to the empowerment of women worldwide,” emphasizes the UNWTO Secretary-General, Zurab Pololikashvili.

The wage gap is smaller in the tourism sector.

In Greece, 30% of entrepreneurs operating in the sector or working in senior management positions are women, one of the highest percentages globally. The professional involvement of women in tourism and the added value they create benefit innovation, the work environment, corporate responsibility, and efforts for the sustainable development of the sector (Kountoura, 2019).
However, women employed in the tourism sector often face challenges related to working conditions, entrepreneurship, education and training, assuming leadership positions, as well as gender stereotypes at the local level…
The women of Karpathos, known for their dynamism, play a leading role in highlighting the island’s unique cultural elements, preserving the customs and traditions of folk culture, and attracting significant interest from visitors… Olympos is considered a folklore paradise…
