Conclusions of the UN Conference on Racism

Karamanou (PSE). – Mr. President, the discussion on the results of the UN Conference on Racism is particularly timely today following the tragic events of September 11. Unfortunately, the global mobilization to combat terrorism seems to coexist with a resurgence of xenophobic syndromes, as Ms. Diamantopoulou mentioned earlier, as well as tendencies to demonize entire population groups, primarily Muslim and Arab. As we read in the international press, the majority of public opinion in the Netherlands, specifically 62% in a country with a long democratic tradition, believes that the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington create serious problems for the social integration of Muslim populations in the Netherlands. At the same time, in Germany, there is support for the need to revise the legislative framework for the operation of religious organizations. A few days ago in Britain, a nineteen-year-old Muslim woman and a taxi driver were subjected to an unprovoked attack. In today’s morning discussion on asylum and migration, many members of this chamber expressed Islamophobic views.

These phenomena are extremely concerning. The experiences of Europe from the terrible wars of the twentieth century have highlighted the dangers that racism, xenophobia, and nationalism pose to peace, democracy, and human dignity. In light of recent events, the European Union and its member states must further strengthen the legal mechanisms they have against racism and take initiatives at a global level to reduce the gap that exists between countries, as well as to banish violence as a means of resolving any disputes. The fight against terrorism and the pursuit of justice must in no way undermine our democratic achievements and the respect for fundamental freedoms and human rights.

Finally, I would like to congratulate the presiding Mr. Michel, as well as the entire European delegation, for their contribution to the success of the UN Conference in Durban.
