Funding for research on accident prevention
WRITTEN QUESTION
Submission: To the Commission
2 October 2003
Subject: Funding for research on accident prevention
According to data from the European Injury Prevention Network, accidents are the third most frequent cause of death in developed countries, particularly among young people.
In Greece, the number and frequency of fatal accidents in various categories reach very high levels.
Despite this extremely concerning fact, the European Commission recently reduced by 30% the funds allocated for research and accident prevention in the countries of the European Union, resulting in a significant hindrance to the efforts of the relevant authorities to carry out their work.
The Committee is asked whether it will support the proposals and requests of the European Network for Accident Prevention and what further measures it intends to take to reduce fatal accidents and enhance the safety of citizens.
