WRITTEN QUESTION P-2370/03
Submission: Anna Karamanou (PSE) to the Commission
(10 July 2003)
Subject: Gang-rape of women by British soldiers in Kenya |
P-2370/03EL
Response from Mr. Patten
on behalf of the Commission
(14.8.2003)
The Committee has received information regarding the gang rape of women allegedly committed by British soldiers in Kenya. The Committee believes that this issue should be monitored by the government of the concerned member state, which should take action. In this context, the Committee wishes to draw attention to the report by Amnesty International titled “Decades of Impunity: Serious allegations of Rape of Kenyan Women by UK Army Personnel,” which notes that in April 2003, the British Royal Military Police’s Special Investigations Branch (RMP-SIB) began an investigation into the allegations of a series of rapes.
