Quota in Border Guard Recruitment

To: – Minister of Public Order Mr. Michalis Chrisochoidis – Minister of Labor & Social Insurance Mr. Dimitrios Reppa
Subject:
Announcement of Recruitment Competition for Border Guards
Athens, 18 July 2002

Honorable Ministers, ,

Following the new announcement of the Ministry of Public Order for the recruitment of Border Guards, I am returning once again, as I regret to observe that in this case, the low quota for the admission of women remains, which effectively excludes their participation in the selection process on equal terms with men.

It is particularly disappointing that, despite the relevant legislation, both Greek and EU law, which deems any restriction on access to employment and any discrimination based on gender illegal, women continue to face systematic discrimination against them by the services of the Ministry of Public Order.

I believe that, as I mentioned in the letter I sent you on 29/4/02 regarding the announcement for the Police Academy recruitment, terms that violate the principle of gender equality in access to employment are unlawful and cannot be applied.

Yours faithfully,

Anna Karamanou
