Situation in Iraq

SESSION OF WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 29, 2003

Intervention by Anna Karamanu in the statement by the High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy on the topic “Situation in Iraq”.

Karamanou (PSE). – If the European governments are unable to reach a common position, as desperately and commendably sought by the Greek Presidency, then let us, from the European Parliament, send a unified, strong, and clear European voice against a war for oil, against unilateral intervention, in violation of international law, against UN Resolution 1441, and against world public opinion.

Mr. Solana,

We have no choice but to give the UN inspectors what they ask for: time, resources, means, and information. Let us give peace one more chance. Unfortunately, wars and violence fall under the exclusive jurisdiction of the men who dominate the decision-making centers. However, the majority of the victims are ordinary citizens, particularly women and children.

As the Committee on Women’s Rights, we have repeatedly emphasized the need to resolve conflicts through peaceful means.

A war in Iraq would not only mean a resounding failure of diplomacy and politics, but also a degradation of the values of our modern civilization. It would also signify Europe’s inability to present a different, youthful model in contrast to the logic and culture of violence promoted by the United States. The responsibility of European leaders at this critical juncture is immense.
