Sudan, Intervention in favor of 16-year-old accused of robbery

Full minutes of the Sessions SESSION OF WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2003 Interventions on significant political issues Karamanos (PSE). Mr. President, yesterday I read with surprise and horror a report by Amnesty International against Sudan, where a special court sentenced a sixteen-year-old defendant for armed robbery to a “crucifixion” amputation, as it is called, meaning his right hand and left foot were to be cut off. Amnesty International condemns the judicial system and criminal legislation of Sudan, which includes such punishments as amputations and executions by stoning, and has made a global appeal to prevent the execution of the sixteen-year-old. I believe, Mr. President, that both our Parliament and you personally need to take initiative and remind Sudan that it has signed the Cotonou Agreement on the respect for human rights. Immediate intervention is required.
