Women’s Rights in Russia
WRITTEN QUESTION E-0463/02
Submission: To the Commission
11 February 2002
Subject: Violation of Women’s Human Rights in the Russian Federation
In an informational document to CEDAW, Amnesty International condemns the violations of women’s rights throughout the Russian Federation. According to reports, during military operations in Chechnya, women and minor girls have suffered abuses, torture, rapes, and even disappearances and executions.
What actions does the Commission intend to take to pressure the Russian government for the clarification of these crimes, the accountability for them, and furthermore, to undertake legislative initiatives in accordance with international conventions and rules for the respect of the rights of women and minor girls in military conflicts, detention conditions, and in their private lives?
